Heure Bleue Palais Essaouira - Essaouira Luxury Hotel (Luxuory Hotels)

The elegant and colonial style Heure Bleu is not your ordinary old Riad or Dar. What you get here is an accommodation of palatial proportions offering five star comforts and one of the most prestigious addresses in Essaouira. Like the town itself, it is very much cosmopolitan and takes in influences from all around the world. Suites decorated in the pastel and blue tones of Portugal, English colonial, French, Eastern and, of course, Moroccan. It was not always thus. Having been built in the 19th century, for many years the "Bleu Hour" fell into picturesque disrepair until it underwent an extensive restoration in 2000 - and the results are there for all to see. This major undertaking mobilised much of the area itself. Regional artisans and materials were called for – tiles from Fez, terracotta from Méknes, “passementerie” from Rabat. To this, one can add latest technologies and comforts(elevator, air conditioning, Internet connection in every room and Turkish baths). Then, of course there are other intangibles, not least of which the 360º panoramic views over the historical medina and port and shade patio.

Hotel Gasthof Doktorwirt (Luxuory Hotels)

If you want to experience genuine Austrian hospitality, stay slightly off the beaten track whilst visiting Salzburg, enjoy a mix of town and country then Gasthof Doktorwirt may be just what the doctor ordered, so to speak. Oh, and the food is pretty special too.

This family run hotel/restaurant scores top marks for friendliness and warmth, particularly so for a place such as Salzburg where so much ebb and flow of tourists may sometimes make the locals feel a bit cold or laissez-faire, shall we say. Not so at the Doktowirt. Carolin is a charmer and a font of local knowledge; the atmosphere is simple and unpretentious and the hotel never tries to be something it is not. It simply makes the most of the many cards it has at its disposal. On top of that intangible charm, rooms are also pretty large and decorated in a traditional, uncomplicated country feel manner.

Mama Ruisa Hotel (Luxuory Hotels)

Rio maybe famous for sun, sea and sand, yet one of its most wonderful places is a bohemian district known as Santa Teresa. It’s made up of paved lanes, exquisite art nouveau manors, cafés and arty stores that wouldn’t look out of place on the left bank of Paris. Rio is definitely not just about the beachfront, after all.
Perhaps that’s why we find the Mama Ruisa in this wonderful area. Run by Jean Michel Ruiz, a French ex-pat, as Jean says this area has the ”elegance of old Europe and a sensual exotic Brazilian flavour”.

The white washed Mama Ruisa definitely imbues a bit of both. Utterly sophisticated, modern and luxurious, all 7 rooms offer breathtaking views of the world renowned Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Rio de Janeiro bay. Collections of drawing by Jean Cocteau, unique photos by Josephine Baker, Colette, Maria Callas and a collection of religious sculptures from all over Brazil make up that combination of the cool of Europe and warmth of Brazil. The result is utterly bewitching.

Then there’s the swimming pool, which surrounded by palm trees and birds of paradise is simply gorgeous. So you might not be right on the beach, or in the centre of town (both only 15 minutes away) but what a view!

Ilha do Toque Toque Boutique Hotel (Luxuory Hotels)

There are times on those dark, wet, cold wintery days that we let our imagination run off to paradisiacal places where the sun always shines, the sand is pure gold and we can smell the blue Ocean. And our dreams will probably include a place that will not be unlike the Ilha do Toque Toque.

“Toque” in the native Indian language means island, so this and the fact that it is located in a preserved area of natural beauty near São Sebastião, immediately tells us something about the place. This area of São Paulo, some 2 ½ hours by car from São Paulo, is absolutely beautiful and takes in mountains, the Atlantic Ocean and forests for good measure. The Ilha do Toque Toque is the only hotel within a 6 mile radius in this little corner of paradise, so if you want secluded, you’ve got secluded. Sitting comfortably some 50 metres above the sea, with amazing views to match, it is an easy walk to a couple of the best beaches in the whole area – Toque Toque Grande and Calhetas beaches. Calheta is only accessed by foot.

Palacio de la Serna Ballesteros de Calatrava - Ciudad Real - Castilla-la-Mancha Village Hotel (Luxuory Hotels)

The interesting 18th century palace has in turns been a people’s house, Military Academy and now it is an interesting hotel owned by the well-known interior designer and painter Eugenio Bermerjo. The presence of Eugenio is everywhere to be seen. He has decorated the whole place with an eclectic mix of furnishings - some classical, some antique and some more modern – where colour and boldness is an ever-present feature. This goes on into the rooms, which like the rest of the house have all been personally and vividly decorated by the host. Eugenio’s own paintings take pride of place and artists will unsurprisingly find this a great place to relax and unwind. Eugenio is only too happy to give out free advice and allow the use of his studio. Budding Picasso’s will surely love it. Those not inclined to artistic pursuits will still find much to do and admire for the hotel is located in an area of great beauty (Cabañeros, Tablas de Daimiel, Lagunas de Ruidera, valle de Alcudia come to mind). Other activities also include biking, an outdoor swimming pool and horse riding. In short, Palacio de la Serna really is a hotel that knows about the art of hospitality.

El Jardín de Carrejo Cabezón de la Sal - Cantabria Countryside Hotel (Luxuory Hotels)

Built in the 19th century, this peaceful country house has only recently opened up its doors to visitors. More’s the pity as it fully lives up to its name (Jardin being Spanish for garden). Firstly, the attractive and comfortable bedrooms, which include two junior suites, open up to some 30,000 square metres of amazing garden full of centuries old trees, which is even crossed by a river. Secondly, the hotel is located between the pretty seaside towns of Santillana del Mar and San Vicente de la Barquera. Decoration and furniture has been specially designed for the hotel and is made from local wood another nice touch.
